PURPOSE
This policy is set in place to ensure children of determination get the best care and facilities as per their needs at Happy Hearts Nursery.
DEFINITIONS
Special needs – particular educational requirements resulting from learning difficulties, physical disability, or emotional and behavioral difficulties.
POLICY STATEMENT
At Happy Hearts Nursery we believe that every child should have the best possible learning opportunities and we therefore promote inclusive practice. We recognize that some children may have particular needs or disabilities and try to identify their learning difficulties and communicate to the parent about the same. At HAPPY HEARTS we do not have the provision and staff to support the children with special needs. When we come across children with any specific special needs we intervene at an early stage guide the parent to outside agencies who can provide appropriate support and care for their child.
Definition of Special Educational Needs
A child has special educational needs if he or she has a learning difficulty which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her.
A child has a learning difficulty if he or she:
- has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age; or
- has a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for children of the same age group.
- is under four and falls within the definition at (a) or (b) above or would do if special educational provision were not made for the child.
A child is not regarded as having a learning difficulty solely because the language or medium of communication of the home is different from the language in which he or she is or will be taught.
It is the responsibility of everyone who works for HAPPY HEARTS NURSERY to:
- make themselves aware of the details of this policy.
- be aware of ‘special needs’ and ‘disabilities’ in the context of Early Years childhood education.
Early identification and intervention (in case the parents have not given information about the child’s special needs before admission)
- We make regular observations and assessments of all children’s play and progress to enable early identification of children’s special needs.
- We monitor the activities and behaviour of children carefully so that we can all report and communicate the same with parents.
- We guide the parent to take support from outside agencies to support their child’s special needs.
